Negaunee Public Schools

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, Negaunee Public Schools, City of Negaunee, County of Marquette, and State of Michigan, held on April 16, 2007, at the Negaunee High School Library.

 

Members Present:   Fae Collins, Dan Hintsala, Osmond T. Kemp, Virginia Paulson, Martin Renaldi, Dave Rice and Martin Saari

Member Absent: None

 

Administrators Present:

James Derocher, Superintendent

Bob Bonetti, High School Principal

Dan Skewis, Middle School Principal

Joe Meyskens, Lakeview School Interim Principal

Mary Kay Johnson, Administrative Aide for Finance

Julie Dompierre, Recording Secretary

 

134.     The meeting was called to order by President Martin Saari at 7:00 p.m.

 

135.     A quorum of the board was established.

 

136.     Motion by F. Collins, supported by M. Renaldi, to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried 7-0.

 

137.     Public Comment - None

 

138.     Motion by V. Paulson, supported by O. Kemp, to approve the minutes of the

regular meeting and closed session held on March 19, 2007. Motion carried 7-0.

 

139.     Motion by M. Renaldi, supported by D. Hintsala, to approve the Consent Items as presented. Motion carried 7-0.

 

140.     Payment of Bills and Financial Reports:

 

A.        Motion by F. Collins, supported by M. Renaldi, to approve the payment of bills totaling $328,630.28. Motion carried 7-0.

 

B.             Received the Financial Report from the Administrative Aide for Finance, Mary Kay Johnson.

 

141.     Written reports were received from the Community Education Director, Health Coordinator and the High School Athletic Director. Oral reports were received from Bob Bonetti, High School Principal, Dan Skewis, Middle School Principal, Joe Meyskens, Lakeview School Interim Principal, and Superintendent Derocher.

 

142.     Correspondence – Superintendent Derocher shared with the Board a copy of a letter he had written to Molly Kus, a teacher at Lakeview, granting her an unpaid leave of absence request.

 

            Board President Saari read a letter written by Marina Lounds, an aide at Lakeview, asking that the school buildings in the district be checked for radon. Superintendent Derocher will follow up with the Marquette County Health Department.

144.     New Business:

 

A.        Jacob Golden, Project Manager, from Wolgast Corporation addressed the Board regarding the bid results on the Lakeview Elementary Special Education addition. A brief question and answer session followed. Motion by D. Hintsala, supported by O. Kemp, to accept the recommendations of Wolgast Corporation and award the project to the following low biders: Sitework – Oberstar, Inc., Concrete – Yalmer Mattila Contracting, Inc., Precast Concrete - Spancrete, Inc., Masonry – David Allen Masonry, Inc., Metals – R.J. Alholm Erecting Co., Inc., Carpentry – A & F Construction Co., LLC, Roofing – Lake State Roofing, Inc., Glass – Traverse City Glass Co., Drywall Insulation – Gagare Tile, Inc., Painting – National Coatings, Inc., Flooring - Carpet Specialist, Mechanical - Dresseler Mechanical, Inc., Fire Protection – Safeguard of Marquette, Inc., Electrical – JP Electric Professionals, Inc. Motion carried 7-0.

 

B.        Mary Herman, Negaunee High School Band Backer member and Gerald Anderson, Band Teacher, requested that the Board of Education consider a proposal to help fund the purchase of additional band uniforms for the band members. No action necessary.

 

C.        Motion by V. Paulson, supported by D. Rice, to award high school diplomas to the following individuals who have completed the Adult Education requirements through the Community Education Program: Chet Barto, Betty Gaines, Amanda Judkins, Billie Jo Korpi, Elise Jylha, Cyle Love, Alissa Thomas, Cheryl Uuro, and Maggie Warden. Motion carried 7-0.

 

D.      Motion by M. Renaldi, supported by O. Kemp, to set Wednesday, August 29, 2007, as the first day of school for the professional staff and Tuesday, September 4, 2007, for the students. Motion carried 7-0.

 

E.         Motion by F. Collins, supported by D. Hintsala, to approve Kyle Saari as the Varsity Boys Tennis Coach for the spring of 2007. Motion carried 7-0.

 

F.         Motion by V. Paulson, supported by D. Rice to award tenure to Kyle Bell and to place the following staff members indicated by probationary steps as follows:

 

            Fourth year probationary status: Paul Collins (until December 2007), Jill Collins and Molly Kus.

 

Third year probationary status: Karie Belanger, Sabina Carlson, Corrie LaCombe, Michelle Morey, Jeff Niemi, and Mike OĠDonnell.

 

Second year probationary status: Dan Bonetti, Jodi Johnson, Bethany Nelson, and Shelly Stetson. Motion carried 7-0.

 

G.        Motion by M. Renaldi, supported by O. Kemp, to approve the request of additional personal leave to Kevin Bell, High School Teacher. Motion carried 7-0.

 

H.        Superintendent Derocher informed the Board that he had received two letters of retirement one from Roger Melka, a Custodian at the Middle School, and one from Lynn Hernandez, a Food Service employee. No action necessary.

 

I.          Superintendent Derocher informed the Board that he had received a resignation letter from Mary Koski, High School Secretary. No action necessary.

           

J.         Motion by M. Renaldi, supported by V. Paulson, to transfer the following Lakeview Elementary teachers to less than full-time positions: Corrie LaCombe and Sabina Carlson. In addition, Bethany Nelson and Jodi Johnson, Lakeview Elementary Teachers, will be laid-off from their positions, due to financial conditions of the district. Motion carried 7-0.

147. Motion by O. Kemp, supported by D. Rice, to adjourn the meeting at
