Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, Negaunee Public Schools, City of Negaunee, County of Marquette, and State of Michigan, held on June 21, 2004, at the

Negaunee High School Library.

 

Members Present:        Fae Collins, Art Gischia, Dan Hintsala, Osmond T. Kemp,

                                     Virginia Paulson, and Dave Rice

189.     The public Budget Hearing was called to order by President Art Gischia at 6:30 p.m. 

 

190.     Motion by D. Hintsala, supported by D. Rice, to adjourn the Budget Hearing at 6:57 p.m.

Motion carried 6-0.     

 

191.     The regular board meeting was called to order by President Art Gischia at 7:00 p.m.

           

192.     A quorum of the board was established.

 

193.     Motion by V. Paulson, supported by O. Kemp, to approve the agenda as presented Motion carried 6-0.

 

194.     Public Comment –

           

The following individuals addressed the Board and supported Gregg Nelson, as the Girls Varsity Basketball Coach:

 

Terry Talus, Steve Ayotte, Troy Mattson, Dean Ellis, Dave Dompierre, Jr., Greg Cansal,  Bobbi Ayotte, Tina Prusi, Allie Ticknell, Mike Geary, Diane Faust, Bart Bartelli,

 

The following individuals addressed the Board and supported the continuation of the Gymnastics program:

 

Kevin Koch, Bridgette Robar, Katie Griffin, Heather Ely, Siiri Lenten, Kristi Griffin, Allyse Langnen, Katie Griffin.

 

At this juncture, Bob Bonetti, Principal at the Negaunee High School, informed the Board that he supported the recommendation made by Mark Marana, Athletic Director, concerning the Girls Varsity Basketball Coaching position.

 

195.     Motion by O. Kemp, supported by F. Collins, to approve the minutes of the regular board      meeting and closed session held on May 17, 2004.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

196.     Motion by D. Hintsala, supported by D. Rice, to approve the consent items as presented.     

            Motion carried 6-0.

 

197.     Payment of Bills and Financial Reports

 

            A.  Motion by D. Rice, supported by O. Kemp, to approve payment of bills totaling   

                  $399,981.30.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

B.  Received the Financial report from the Administrative Aide for Finance, Mary Kay

      Johnson.

 

198.     Written reports were received from the, Community Education Director, Health and

             Shine Coordinators and the High School Assistant Principal.  Oral reports were received

             from Bob Bonetti, High School Principal, Ron Saari, Lakeview School Principal, Paulette      Patron, Special Education Coordinator, and James Derocher, Superintendent.

201.     New Business:

 

            A.   Motion by O. Kemp, supported by V. Paulson, to approve the following 2003-04

                   budget amendment:  revenues totaling $11,100,718 and expenditures anticipated at                           $11,207,911.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

            B.   Motion by D. Hintsala, supported by F. Collins, to approve the 2004-05 budget, with

                    a revenue forecast of $11,161,363 and expenditures projected at $11,278,639. 

                    Motion carried 6-0.         

 

C.   Motion by V. Paulson, supported by D. Rice, to approve the reinstatement of   

       of a student into the 11th grade.  Motion carried 6-0.      

 

D.   Motion by O. Kemp, supported by D. Rice, to approve the following cost increases:

 

            Pay to Participate         $70 with a family cap of $155

            Family Passes               $130

            Adult Couple               $110

            Single Adult                 $ 70

            Student                                    $ 50

           

            High School Ticket Prices:      

            Varsity Football                       $5.00 (adult) / $3.00 (student)

            JV Football                  $4.00/$2.00                                            

                        9th Grade Football        $4.00/$2.00

                        Girls Basketball                        $5.00/$3.00

                        Boys Basketball                        $5.00/$3.00

                        Volleyball                    $4.00/$2.00

                        Wrestling                     $4.00/$2.00

                        Gymnastics                  $4.00/$2.00

 

                        Middle School Ticket Prices:

                        Basketball and Track Meet prices         $3.00 (adult) / $2.00 (student)

 

Also, to continue the Gymnastics program for the 2004-05 school year. 

Motion carried 6-0.

 

E.   Motion by F. Collins, supported by V. Paulson, to adopt the Resolution to Borrow in              

       the amount of $995,000.  A roll call vote was taken -  all ayes.  Motion carried 6-0.

           

F.    Motion by V. Paulson, supported by D. Rice, to approve the Schedule B appointment

        of Gregg Nelson, as the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. Motion tied 3-3.

 

G.  Motion by V. Paulson, supported by O. Kemp, to approve the following Schedule B positions:

H.        Superintendent Derocher informed the Board he had received a letter of resignation from Chris Jackson, Varsity Hockey Coach.  No action necessary.

 

I.          Superintendent Derocher informed the Board he had received a letter of retirement from Linda Warner, a Lakeview Elementary Teacher.  No action necessary.

 

J.          The annual election (unofficial) results were listed as follows: No action necessary.

                                                Martin Michael Renaldi            255 Votes

           

                        The Sinking Fund ballot was approved by a vote of 512 YES and 237 NO.   

 

            K.        The Board reviewed the first reading of Board Policy changes listed below:

0167.3, 3430.01, 4430.01, 5610.01, and 9800.  No action necessary at this time.

                       

L.         Motion by D. Hintsala, supported by F. Collins, to approve the addition of AFLAC Insurance to the cafeteria plan for all employees.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

M.        Motion by V. Paulson, supported by O. Kemp, to approve continued membership in the Michigan High School Athletic Association, (MHSAA).  A roll call vote was taken -  all      ayes.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

N.        Motion by D. Rice, supported by O. Kemp, to approve a self-supportive co-operative bowling agreement, for both boys and girls, with the Ishpeming School District. Motion carried 6-0.

 

O.        Motion by F. Collins, supported by D. Hintsala, to approve the revisions to the High and Middle Schools Student Handbook, with the changes as discussed:  Motion carried 6-0.

 

202.    Public Comment:

 

The Board, Superintendent Derocher, and Bob Bonetti, High School Principal, answered questions and discussed the issue of Schedule B appointments, including the Girls Varsity Basketball Coaching position, with the following members of the community.

 

Joan King, Dave Dompierre, Jr., Tina Prusi, Linda Dompierre, Betty Nelson, Steve Ayotte, and Jean Nordeen.  No action necessary.

204.       Motion by V. Paulson, supported by D. Hintsala, to adjourn the meeting at 9:30 p.m.
