Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, Negaunee Public Schools, City of Negaunee, County of Marquette, and State of Michigan, held on August 18, 2003, at the Negaunee Middle School Library.

 

Members Present: Fae Collins, Art Gischia, Dan Hintsala, Osmond T. Kemp,

Virginia Paulson, Dave Rice and Martin Saari

Members Absent: None

 

Administrators Present:

James Derocher, Superintendent

Bob Bonetti, High School Principal

Bob Trebilcock, Middle School Principal

Ron Saari, Lakeview School Principal

Paulette Patron, Special Education Coordinator

Lorraine Johnson, Administrative Aide for Finance

Julie Dompierre, Recording Secretary

 

Others Present: Kyle Bell

 

28.       The meeting was called to order by President Art Gischia at 7:00 p.m.

 

29.       A quorum of the board was established.

 

30.       Motion by M. Saari, supported by O. Kemp, to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried 7-0.

 

31.       Public Comment:

Bob Trebilcock introduced Kyle Bell, the new Industrial Arts Middle School teacher, to the Board.

 

32.       Motion by V. Paulson, supported by F. Collins, to approve the minutes of the

regular meeting held on July 21, and the special meeting held on July 28, 2003. Motion carried 7-0.

 

33.       Consent Items - None

 

34.       Payment of Bills and Financial Reports

 

A.        Motion by F. Collins, supported by D. Hintsala, to approve payment of bills totaling $352,733.72. Motion carried 7-0.

 

B.        Received the Financial report from the Administrative Aide for Finance, Lorraine Johnson.

 

35.       Oral reports were received from Bob Bonetti, High School Principal, Bob Trebilcock, Middle School Principal, Ron Saari, Lakeview School Principal, Paulette Patron, Special Education Coordinator and Superintendent Derocher.

 

36.       Correspondence - None

           

37.       Old Business - None

38.       New Business:

 

A.        Motion by F. Collins, supported by V. Paulson, to approve the reinstatement of Rachel Reichel to the 9th grade. Motion carried 7-0.        

 

B.        No action was taken in regards to sending a delegate to the MASB conference on November 6.

 

C.        Motion by O. Kemp, supported by D. Rice, to approve the purchase of the following textbooks for the Negaunee Middle School:

Globe Fearon American History and

Target Spelling 1260

            Motion carried 7-0.

D.        Motion by F. Collins, supported by M. Saari, to award the following bids for the 2003-04 school year:

            Dairy Ð BahrmanÕs Blue Ribbon Dairy

Bakery Ð Thurner Bakery, Inc.

Motion carried 7-0.

 

E.         Superintendent Derocher informed the Board that he received a retirement letter from Fred Langson, a High School custodian. The Superintendent then discussed the hiring procedures for this position and the recall of Steve Smith, a laid-off custodian. No action necessary.

                                                                                               

F.         Motion by D. Hintsala, supported by O. Kemp, to approve the following Schedule B positions:

 

            Freshman Football - Andy Skewis, Head Coach

Kyle Bell, Assistant Coach

                                                Jeff Niemi, Volunteer Assistant

Justin Robar, Volunteer Assistant

            Motion carried 7-0.

 

G.        The Board discussed the following goals for the Superintendent:                              

p Accreditation of Schools Concerning Education YES

p Maintain a Balanced Budget

                                    p Building Maintenance Ð Millage Request

                                    p Market the School District

                       

Board President Gischia would like to revisit this item. No action necessary.

40. Other Business:

The Board was informed that Michigan Educational Board is looking for new members. No action necessary.

 

41. Motion by M. Saari, supported by O. Kemp, to adjourn the meeting at 8:12 p.m.
