  • Driver's Education Segment 2 Course Eligibility:
    To enroll in segment 2, you must:
    1. Complete and pass segment 1 of driver’s education.
    2. Maintain a level 1 learner’s license for at least 3 consecutive months from the date on the students license without receiving a citation for a driving or licensing violation.
    3. A driving log must be presented on the first day of class to verify that the student has completed a minimum of 30 hours of driving (including 2 hours at night) with a licensed adult aged 21 or older.
    NPS Driver's Education Segment 2 Provisions:
    1. The parent/guardian agrees to pay the total amount of $75 ($50 for NHS students) on the first day of class in the form of cash or check made out to Negaunee Public Schools.
    2. After the beginning of the second class session, no refund shall be given.
    3. The student may miss class only for an illness or emergency with documented proof presented to the instructor. The student is required to make up for missed class time that will be scheduled with the instructor.
    Classroom Instructions/Testing
    1. Students must take part in daily quizzes/tests.
    2. Students must complete at least 6 hours of in-class instruction (no more than 2 hours per day). Negaunee Public Schools will provide a minimum of 6 hours of classroom instruction with a certified Michigan Driver Education Instructor.
    3. Students will be allowed up to two attempts to pass the state exam, which requires a score of at least 70%.
    Additional Information:
    After completion of this driver's education segment 2 course, in order to be eligible for a level 2 license, the student must:
    1. Be at least 16 years old.
    2. Completed and passed segment 2 of driver’s education.
    3. Held a level 1 license for at least 6 months from the issued date on their license.
    4. Completed and logged at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving (at least 10 hours at night) with an authorized, licensed adult aged 21 or older, since the issuance of their level 1 license.
    5. Passed the on-road driving skills test.
    6. Not been at-fault in a traffic accident, received a citation or license sanction, or been convicted of a driving-related violation for at least 90 days before their on-road driving skills test.
    • After successfully completing all GDL requirements and passing the on-road driving skills test, the provider will add the student's certificate to their driving record with the Michigan Department of State, which will automatically upgrade their level 1 license to a level 2 intermediate license.

    • Unless the student was issued a paper level 1 license (instead of a hard card), you do not need to visit a Secretary of State office. When the student's licensing level is updated, you will be mailed a letter confirming the change.

    • A level 2 intermediate license allows the student to drive independently, without a parent/legal guardian or authorized adult, under certain restrictions.

    Completion of driver education instruction does not guarantee qualification for a driver license.
