The primary purpose of our school is teaching and learning. It is our responsibility to develop the intellectual, vocational, physical, creative, cultural, and social capabilities of all our students to their maximum potential. Our schools belong to the people of the community and we further realize that productive schools are built on partnerships of citizens, parents, and staff.
At the regular meeting of the Board of Education held on Monday, January 21, 2013, the Board took action to increase the security measures for all the school buildings. While we believe we live in a community where neighbors know neighbors and incidents like what has happened in other parts of the country could never happen in Negaunee, we need to be realistic when the safety of our students and staff could be a concern. Therefore, electronic door locks and other security cameras are being installed at Lakeview Elementary School, Negaunee Middle School, and Negaunee High School to limit access into the schools and to monitor the activity within the buildings. All outside doors will be locked during the school day and entrance into the buildings will only be accessible from the main entrances at each building with the Birch Street entrance at Lakeview an additional electronically controlled option.
With the new electronic door locks, visitors are being asked to use a buzzer system to ask for access to the schools. School personnel will ask for identification and the purpose for the visit before granting access to the building. Once inside the building, visitors are asked to proceed directly to the Principal’s Office for an identification badge/visitor pass, which needs to be worn while in the building. If you are a visitor in a school building without a badge/pass, you will be asked by school personnel to return to the office to procure a pass.
These increased security messages are being taken to insure the safety of our students and staff. While we recognize that there will be a delay in entering any of the buildings under these new procedures, we are asking for your understanding and patience as we work together to provide a safe environment for teaching and learning.
