Negaunee Public Schools Driver’s Education Seg. 1 Contract

Entry submissions after 11:59 PM on September 4th will not be accepted into the September class and will have to re-submit an entry for the next class. The next segment 1 session will be open for entries on October 2nd for the October class!

Class Information
  • Class dates: September 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, October 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17. All class dates are from 7-9pm
  • Mandatory student/parent meeting: September 10th from 7-9 pm
  • Cost (due on first class day): $475 ($400 NPS students)

Driver’s Education Segment 1 Course Eligibility:
To enroll in segment 1, the student must:
  1. The student must be at least 14-years and 8-months of age by the first day of this segment 1 course. Verification by birth certificate will be required at the local Secretary of State office.
NPS Driver’s Education Segment 1 Provisions:
  1. The parent or legal guardian agrees to pay the total amount of $475 ($400 for NPS students) by or on the first day of class in the form of online payment, cash or check.
  2. The student may miss class only for an illness or emergency with documented proof presented to the instructor. The student is required to make up for missed class time that will be scheduled with the instructor.
  3. If we are filled over capacity, the oldest students will take priority after Negaunee students.
  4. Before the beginning of the third class session, 100% of the total tuition will be refunded if no behind-the-wheel instruction was given.
  5. After the beginning of the third class session, no refund shall be given.
Classroom/Driving Instructions
  • Negaunee Public Schools will provide a minimum of 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction and 6 hours of observation time with a certified Michigan Driver Education Instructor.
  • The student must complete at least 6 hours of on-road driving instruction with the driver’s education provider. The student can drive up to 1 hour each day.
    • Before beginning on-road instruction, the student must complete at least 4 hours of class.
    • The student must complete at least 3 hours of on-road driving instruction must be completed before the final class. Remaining time should be completed within 3 weeks of the final class.
  • Observe another student’s driving for at least 4 hours with your driver’s education provider.
  • Parent/legal guardian must provide written consent before the student can begin on-road driving instruction.
  • Negaunee Public Schools will conduct the “behind the wheel” instruction of the class in a dual-controlled automobile that is insured by the provider to cover each student enrolled in the program.
Testing Information
  1. The student must complete all homework and take daily quizzes/tests.
  2. The student will be allowed up to two attempts to pass the state exam, which requires a passing score of at least 70%.
  3. The student must pass ALL behind-the-wheel performance objectives, per the Driver Education Provider and Instructor Act (DEPIA), at the instructor’s professional discretion with a satisfactory or higher grade.
Additional Information:
After completion of this driver’s education segment 1 course, in order to be eligible for a level 1 learner’s license, the student must:
  1. Complete and pass segment 1 of driver’s education.
  2. Receive a Driver Education Certificate of Completion for segment 1.
  3. Meet the state requirements for quality of vision and physical and mental standards that are mandated for operating a vehicle.
After eligibility is complete, the student will need to apply for their level 1 learner’s license at a Secretary of State office with their parent/legal guardian to provide the following documents:
  1. Driver Education Certificate of Completion for Segment 1
  2. Proof of legal presence
  3. Proof of Social Security number
  4. Proof of identification
  5. Proof of Michigan residency (2 documents)
  6. At your visit, you will take a photo for your Level 1 card and complete a vision exam.
Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program
  • The level 1 learner’s license is the first of three licensing categories in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.
  • A level 1 learner’s license allows the student to practice driving with a licensed parent/guardian or designated adult who is at least 21 years old.
  • As the student progresses through GDL program, their level 1 learner’s license, which is issued at Secretary of State office, will be automatically updated when they become eligible for other licensing levels.

If you have any complaint that cannot be settled with the provider, please complete the Driver Education Complaint form found on the Department of State website; www.michigan.gov/teendriver. Completion of driver education instruction does not guarantee qualification for a driver license.

This is where TWO confirmation emails will be sent. One within 1-2 business days letting you know I received your contract submission, and another after the deadline date in the title description area letting you know whether the student is accepted into the class or not.
Mandatory parent meeting:(Required)
If accepted into the class, the student and at least one trusted adult must attend the mandatory meeting on the first day of class. Payment will be confirmed, driving hours will be scheduled, and an overview of the class will be explained.
